Choosing A Counselor

At Friends of the Family, we understand the significance of finding the right counselor for your needs. You are welcome to request a specific counselor, and if they currently have no immediate openings, we can place you on a waitlist for their availability.

In determining the best match for you, we take into account various factors, including each counselor’s availability, your presenting issues, the urgency of your needs, and how well the counselor’s fee structure aligns with your financial situation.

To assist you in making an informed decision, we encourage you to get to know our counselors through their short biographies and photos provided above. Feel free to request a specific counselor or inquire about the soonest availability.

For personalized guidance, our knowledgeable staff can be reached at (541) 757-1761. They are well-informed about each counselor’s strengths, training, and interests, and can help you find the best fit and schedule your initial appointment.

Additionally, if desired we offer a free 15-minute consultation with a counselor, providing you with an opportunity to further assess whether you will be an effective match in accomplishing your goals together.

We recognize the importance of a comfortable and effective counseling relationship. If, for any reason, after a few sessions, you feel that the current counselor is not the right fit for you, don’t worry. We are here to help explore other options. We can facilitate a transfer to another counselor within our office or offer referrals to external professionals who may be a better match for your needs. Your well-being is our priority, and we are committed to supporting you in finding the best path forward.

F.A.Q.

Direct Billing of Insurance: We offer direct billing for certain insurance companies, and we are continuously expanding our panel. Please contact our office at 541-757-1761 to check if your insurance company is currently part of our eligible providers.

Indirect Use of Insurance: If your insurance company is not directly billed by us, you may still be able to use your insurance. Our credentialed counselors are typically considered “Out of Network Providers” by most insurance companies. While counseling at Friends of the Family will be an out-of-pocket expense at the time of service, we can provide you with a “Super Bill” receipt. You can submit this to your insurance company for partial or sometimes even full reimbursement. To understand your plan’s coverage for out-of-network healthcare providers, please contact your insurance company directly.

Out-of-Pocket Fees for Counseling: To ensure accessibility for all, we offer a Sliding Fee Scale based on household income. Thanks to the support of caring individuals in our community, Friends of the Family can keep our rates affordable.

Special Circumstances and Scholarships: We allocate limited funds annually to assist individuals with special needs through scholarships. If you wish to be considered for a scholarship, please contact our front office to learn more about the application process.

All of our clinicians have completed rigorous, scientifically-grounded training to get where they are and are either maintaining professional licensure in the State of Oregon or are on track to acquire it in the near future. Each clinician is also grounded in their own personal faith in Jesus Christ and is sensitive to the spiritual issues that impact all of our lives. However, the degree to which faith is directly integrated into counseling sessions is determined by the client. We respect the importance of every client’s belief system. We will ask you about this in the first session and incorporate biblical truths, insights and principles into our work together as much as you desire.

We serve many client populations, including those who do not identify with a Christian faith. Our counselors are trained to create a supportive and compassionate space for you and do not pray, share Scripture, or other practices related to Christian faith if that is not something you want to include.

We will briefly review paperwork and policies related to counseling. The remainder of the session is more of an opportunity to learn about you, what you are currently facing, the symptoms and challenges you are experiencing, and to learn how we can best support you and help you reach your goals.

Treatment length is a personalized process that varies depending on your issues and goals for therapy. Our goal is to provide you thorough care that meets your needs. We will make recommendations based on your symptoms and goals and create a plan together, taking into consideration your financial situation and, if you are paying through insurance, any limitations required there.

Counseling sessions are typically 50-minutes in length. On occasion up to 80-minutes is set aside for Intake Sessions or for sessions with couples or families. This will be decided ahead of time so all parties can plan accordingly.

Yes! Our counselors have received training in Prepare/Enrich as a tool for helping you see areas of strength and growth in your relationship that we can address together. Ask about our package that includes an assessment and 6-8 sessions with a counselor. Occasionally, we offer an alternate package that includes a six-hour workshop with a group of couples, followed by three personalized sessions with one of our facilitators.
