“Friendship fuels the flames of romance because it offers the best protection against feeling adversarial toward your spouse.”
— John Gottman

About the Seven Principles…

Successful marriages are a result of intentional and proactive work by a committed husband and wife over the course of the relationship. A marriage retreat is a great way to learn more about each other, have fun, and strengthen the relationship.

Friends of the Family’s Seven Principles Workshop for couples is based on the internationally acclaimed research of Dr. John Gottman as presented in his New York Times bestselling book, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.

Marriage was originally God’s idea. He wove profound truths about marriage and healthy relationships into His Word. When those truths are overlaid with very practical wisdom from social science research, new paths to strengthening marriages emerge.

For over 40 years Dr. Gottman scientifically analyzed the habits of married couples and established a method of correcting the behaviors that put thousands of marriages at risk for failure. He helps couples understand the importance of friendship, focusing on the small day-to-day moments, and building trust.

Research shows that on average, couples wait six years from the first sign of problems before they seek help. Be proactive and learn what decades of research teach us about healthy relationships.

This educational workshop has been offered across the US and internationally, and has strengthened the relationships of tens of thousands of couples. It’s specifically designed to help couples improve their friendship and learn powerful communication and conflict management skills.

Goal of the Seven Principles…

The main goal of this workshop/retreat is to help couples strengthen their relationships in a variety of ways including deepening their love maps, fostering fondness and admiration, learning to turn toward each other, accepting influence, solving solvable problems, overcoming gridlock, creating shared meaning, and maintaining gains.

Couples will have the opportunity to build supportive relationships with other couples attending the workshop, aiding in normalizing couples issues and breaking down the feeling of isolation.
